MAPPING THE FOUNDATIONS OF PEACE IN GALMUDUG STATE, SOMALIA: RECONCILIATION, SECURITY AND RULE OF LAW, STATE BUILDING, DEMOCRATIZATION AND DECENTRALIZATION.

Mapping the Foundations of Peace project funded by SDC and SIDA aims to address the root causes of conflicts and create an environment conducive for sustainable development. HC serves as a neutral platform for community dialogue, facilitating peace building and reconciliation efforts. This research also sought to provide recommendations for enhancing reconciliation, security and rule of law, State building, democratization, and decentralization in Galmudug State, and by doing so, contribute to the ongoing efforts to promote peace, stability, and development in Somalia at large.
To attain peace in Galmudug, it is important that the government and local community work together to liberate themselves from extremist groups. For example, between 2009 and 2011, the Galmudug communities like in Dhuusamareeb district united with government security forces to confront al-Shabaab. This kind of unity yielded successful results as al-Shabaab militants were driven away from the region. It is important to note that infighting among communities gives al-Shabaab an advantage as it prevents communities from uniting to confront them.
