ENGAGE CITIZENS ON POLITICAL LITERACY AND POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN GALMUDUG
Engage Citizens on Political Literacy and Political Participation in Galmudug event was organized by Horncenter (HC) Dialogue on November 25–26. The initiative aimed to address the pressing challenges of limited political awareness and participation among the citizens of Galmudug. The event emphasized equipping participants with the knowledge and tools needed to engage effectively in governance processes, laying a foundation for stronger democratic principles and inclusive governance in the region.
Objectives
The event sought to achieve the following key objectives:
1. Enhance citizens’ understanding of Galmudug’s governance systems.
2. Encourage active participation in political processes, including elections and policymaking.
3. Foster dialogue between citizens and government representatives to strengthen democratic engagement.
The Panel Team
The event was spearheaded by Horncenter (HC) Dialogue and involved diverse stakeholders, including government officials, civil society representatives, youth groups, women’s organizations, and local community leaders. Prominent figures on the panel discussions included:
* Wasiir Ali Seeko – Minister of Information, Galmudug.
* Professor Ahmed Salad Kulmiye – Horncenter Peace and Reconciliation Manager.
* Saynab Gurey – Civil Society Representative.
* Abdisalam Firidho – Politician and a Member of the PPP Galmudug party.
The discussions revolved around four key themes: (i) Understanding Galmudug’s Legal and Political Systems: Equipping citizens with foundational knowledge of the region’s governance structures and legal framework. (ii) Government’s Role in Promoting Political Literacy: Highlighting policies and strategies for fostering an informed and participatory citizenry. (iii) Collective Action for Democratic Governance: Stressing the importance of community collaboration to ensure democratic elections and governance. (iv) Addressing Barriers to Citizen Engagement: Identifying and mitigating challenges to enforcing laws and increasing public participation in decision-making processes.
The event featured a mix of activities designed to inform, engage, and empower attendees:
Panel Discussions: The panel members delivered insightful remarks on the importance of political literacy and engagement. Wasiir Ali Seeko emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure laws and governance systems are accessible and understandable, stating, “A democracy thrives when its people are informed and actively involved in shaping their future.” Professor Ahmed Salad Kulmiye highlighted the critical role of reconciliation and peace in political participation, remarking, “Without stability, no meaningful political participation can occur. Education and awareness are key to maintaining peace and fostering dialogue.” Saynab Gurey underscored the need for women and marginalized groups to be included, saying, “True democracy leaves no one behind. It is our collective duty to ensure every voice is heard.” Abdisalam Firidho shared historical perspectives on governance in Galmudug and urged citizens to “embrace their responsibility as the stewards of democracy.
